The CourtesyCheck
is self-service device for libraries and to be used by
Patrons to borrow or return items from a library. This is
remarkably similar to Automatic teller machines (ATMs) which
enable customers of financial institutions to transact
various functions (such as withdrawal or deposit) through a
graphical user interface.
The CourtesyCheck continuously prints
all loans (or returns) on one receipt to save paper. All
receipts are customizable to include special formatting and
library messages.The
CourtesyCheck interfaces with any
existing library automation vendor system that supports the
3M Standard Protocol (SIP1 and SIP2). This protocol controls
the passing of messages from the CourtesyCheck
to the circulation system and the appropriate response.
3M has granted permission for anyone to use the protocol.
The CourtesyCheck is designed for
non-security applications. The name for the system arose
from its proposed use, in that it is a courtesy for patrons
to check their items out of libraries that do not have
security systems and so that others could find out where to
contact them if they needed the same item. Typically, this
could happen in small public or corporate libraries. |
