New software is freight-frugal

Gray Technologies Inc., a Minnetonka technology-services firm, has high hopes for a new product targeting the mid-size freight market. Its application analyzes freight haulers to gauge the best deal for a specific location.

CEO Steve Gray said the company is targeting a freight segment known as LTL, or "Less Than truckLoad." As the name suggests, LTL represents shipments that are bigger than a basic package but smaller than a complete truck. It's a big market, Gray said, and a complicated one. "Small packages are straightforward," he said -- just call FedEx or an equivalent. "Trucks are straightforward. But LTL has a very complicated rate structure."

The software, developed with TenFold Corp., analyzes various combinations for ways customers can save up to 20 percent on freight.

Data Collection News

Gray Technologies has recently completed a custom “Product Audit” application for a grocery and convenience store distributor. The challenge was to: 1) capture the data needed electronically making the regular audit of on-hand products represented by the distributor easy for their sales staff and, 2) allow that data to be reported to the product manufacturers using Microsoft’s Access database. This application uses Symbol Technologies’ SPT1550 Palm terminal and can be compiled for a Pocket PC 2002.

RFID (radio frequency identification) tag technology is gaining momentum and Gray Technologies has been certified as an integrator and reseller by Alien Technology. Alien Technology is the leader in the development and manufacturing of long range (2” to 10’) 915Mhz RFID tags using their patented “fluidic assembly” process. This new process allows cost RFID tags to be reduced by 50% compared with the cost price of competing tags. These new RFID tags can be read only or read/write with up to 256 characters.
